Fannie Mae Smith was watching television in her living room during the early morning hours of January 3, 2012 when gunshots tore through her home.
Smith's son was sleeping upstairs and was brought out of his sleep by the gunfire. "I ran downstairs because I didn't hear her call for me and when I got to her I knew she was dead," Mr. Smith said.
Mrs. Smith's murder was the first homicide in Toledo in 2012. It prompted a press conference later in the day by Mayor Mike Bell and Police Chief Derrick Diggs, in which they called for an end to gun violence in the city.
James Smith says that his mother was his best friend and that the hopes that he and his family will get justice. "I want to be around when they find out who did it; I want to see him because my mother wasn't supposed to get that," Mr. Smith said.
