TOLEDO - The State Highway Patrol reports accidents involving several tractor-trailers have shut down the Ohio Turnpike in both directions near Sandusky.
A patrol spokeswoman says two people were killed as a result of the crashes, and a trooper suffered serious injuries when he was pinned between vehicles while investigating one of the accidents.
The Ohio Turnpike says a crash at mile post 102 eastbound in Sandusky County is currently blocking all lanes. Another crash at mile post 112 has closed westbound lanes.
The crashes have caused a pileup that stretches over two miles and involves an estimated 50 vehicles, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Many counties along the top edge of the state from the Indiana state line to Sandusky are telling drivers to stay off the roads unless they are emergency or essential personnel.
