Toledo City Council approved the city's 2012 budget two months ahead of its March 31 schedule on Tuesday night.
The $601 million budget will go toward Toledo's general fund, a majority of which will fund improving city safety by staffing law enforcement departments and re-establishing the emergency fund. The city plans to hire 40 new police officers to begin training by Sept. 1.
The council also approved 11 new red light cameras they hope will generate funds for recreation programs in Toledo.
"Even I, who am a proponent of liberties and 'you do as you will as long as it doesn't break the law,' think it's a creative way to fund recreation," Councilman Tyrone Riley said.
