The childhood home of Toledo native and jazz music icon Art Tatum sits abandoned on the corner of City Park and Woodland near Door. The windows on the first floor of the home are boarded up and the windows on the second floor are broken. A marker from the Ohio Historical Museum sits outside the house. Eugene Washington, a board member of the Art Tatum Resource Center at the Kent branch of the Toledo/Lucas County public library, grew up a few blocks away. "The exterior should be given some presence that is purposeful and respectful of Art tatum's legacy," Mr. Washington.
Washington says if the the funds could be raised the home could be transformed into a tourist attraction. "It could be a stop on a bus tour and have the TARTA trolley come by and show people this is where the Art Tatum birthplace is," Mr. Washington said.
The Kent Library Branch is home to a collection of Art Tatum memorabilia. It is located at 3101 Collingwood Blvd.
