Students at Bennett Venture Academy gathered Thursday night to celebrate the life of Army Staff Sgt. Carlos Lazaney Rodriguez, one of the three soldiers killed in the April Fort Hood shooting.
Sgt. Lazaney-Rodriguez's son, Alex Lazaney Molina, is a third-grader at Bennett.
The serviceman has been honored since his deathm but his son doesnâ??t want to just honor his father. He wants to celebrate his life. Thatâ??s what he did Thursday with his friends from the Bennett Venture Academy.
A school social worker, Dawn Taylor, says she recently asked Alex how he feels about all the support. â??He said, I feel like I can finally celebrate my dad,â?? Taylor said. â??People are finally paying attention, and I can go on and do great things.â??
Taylor says the community celebrated third-grade style, with a bouncy house and live music. Ticket sales will help Alex travel to a therapeutic horse ranch in North Carolina, specializing in children whoâ??ve experienced trauma.
Many servicemen and women stuck around for the party.
â??Even though his fatherâ??s gone, theyâ??re still part of the Army family, and weâ??ll always be there for him,â?? U.S. Army Captain George Fruth said.
