Beware of phone scams acting as Monroe County officers

Phone scammers are pretending their police to get money.

Residents in Monroe County have been complaining about mysterious callers asking for money.

The phone soliticitors have been posing as police officials wanting money for its D.A.R.E. program, the national program that aids against drug abuse and violence. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office denies any involvement with the phone callers' "fundraising efforts."

Sheriff Dale Malone said the department does support D.A.R.E program, but no officers including the sheriff have not planned a fundraiser this week. Authorities confirmed Thursday a Monroe Police Department will have fundraiser efforts for a dance, but the county does not have any connection to the callers.
