A blown transformer led to a traffic nightmare in South Toledo early Thursday afternoon.

Toledo Police urged drivers to avoid the area of Airport Highway and Holland-Sylvania after a transformer blew, causing the traffic light at the busy intersection to explode.

The incident caused power outages to hundreds of residents and businesses around the area. The intersection was closed to traffic for nearly two hours at midday.

As of 3:30 p.m., FirstEnergy reported over 1,200 customers without power in the Springfield Township area.

St. John's Jesuit sent students home at 1:30 p.m. due to a power outage at the school.
