A Labor Day boat outing turned to tragedy Monday when a Westland, MI boater drowned while swimming near Monroe.
At approximately 7:40 PM Monday, Monroe County central dispatch received a report of a missing boater. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a small inland pool off Lake Erie known as the "Hot Hole."
Investigation revealed that Harallamb Tasi, 24, was swimming with friends when he went to retrieve a ball in the water. Witnesses reported that Tasi went under water and never resurfaced. His friends searched for him unsuccessfully.
The Monroe County Sheriff deployed patrol boats and divers to the area and conducted a search. The sheriff's helicopter also responded. The U.S. Coast Guard sent a patrol boat and also deployed a helicopter.
At approximately 11:15, sheriff's divers located Tasi in eight feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case remains under investigation.
