Shortly before 11 a.m. a Coast Guard crew pulled the bodies of two men from Lake Erie about 7 miles offshore from the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant. The men were later identified as 54-year-old Godfried McKinney of Southfield and 64-year-old Kendrick Covington of Detroit. The men were reported missing early Thursday morning after failing to return home from a fishing trip Wednesday. McKinney's truck was found in the parking lot of Hellenberg Park on Front Street in Monroe. Major Jeff Kamp of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office spoke to reporters at Sterling State Park in Monroe where the bodies of the two men were brought ashore at midday. "There were high winds and the temperature right now is 54 degrees," Major Kemp said.
Both men were wearing their life vests when their bodies were discovered. The bodies were taken to Detroit. Autopsies will be performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner. The Coast Guard has yet to recover the boat in which the men were fishing.
