Breaking: U.S. embassy under attack in Afghanistan

Police say insurgents are firing rockets toward the U.S. embassy in Afghan capital.

The BBC reports the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted official buildings in the area. Initial reports suggest at least four suicide bombers are involved and that attackers are hiding in a building that is under construction in the area.

Other foreign embassies, NATO's Afghan headquarters and government ministry buildings are also located in the area under attack.

"There has been an explosion and gunfire, there are several armed attackers in Abdul Haq Square," Mohammad Zahir, head of Kabul's Crime Investigation Unit, told Reuters news agency.
