The newest record-breaking ride at America's Roller Coast is almost ready to spread its wings.
Cedar Point announced Wednesday that crews connected the last of the 102 pieces of track on the GateKeeper, closing the 4,164 loop and transforming the park's entrance. The GateKeeper sets a new world record as the longest and tallest "winged" coaster in the world, which features seats that hang off the sides of the main track.
â??GateKeeper is truly an innovation in thrills,â?? said Rob Decker, Cedar Fairâ??s corporate vice president of planning and design. â??Every twist, turn and near-miss element was created exclusively for Cedar Point, and we canâ??t wait to see our guests experience it.â??
Riders will enjoy the sensation of flight as they climb the 170-foot lift hill along the beach, then charge toward the main gate at speeds up to 67 mph. The 2 minute, 40 second ride features six inversions and rolls through two keyholes that fly directly over guests entering the park.
Roller coaster enthusiasts can check out the GateKeeper when the park opens on May 11, 2013.
