A man convicted of sexually assaulting a Chihuahua was ordered to serve 10 years in prison and register as a sex offender upon his release, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Prosecutors said Robert DeShields, 55, is a wheelchair-bound parolee and chronic methamphetamine user who sexually assaulted the small dog named Shadow. The official charge is felony cruelty to animals, which is why DeShields' defense attorney objected to the judge's decision to make DeShields register as a sex offender, the report said.

DeShields assaulted the dog while the dog's owner, who had given DeShields a temporary place to live, was out of the house.

Shadow survived severe internal injuries with the help of surgeons and now lives with a county shelter employee, Laura Badeker, according to published reports.

"Shadow is a victim in every sense of the word," Badeker is quoted as telling the judge at a hearing Friday.

Badeker reportedly said the dog is extraordinarily fearful of men, "like many victims of sexual assault."
