City urges site of wild shootout be kept closed

At a hearing Monday, Toledo officials urged Municipal Court Judge C. Allen McConnell to block the Route 66 Bar and Grill from reopening, at least before the end of the year.

The judge said he would make a decision within days.

Police said at least five people fired off shots during a wild gun battle inside the bar on Oct. 8. Patrons fled, and no injuries were reported.

Garry Hitts, whose family has owned the Route 66 for nearly 30 years, says those who did the shooting were not regular customers. He promised the judge that he would add metal detectors at the door and other security measures if the bar is permitted to reopen.
