Collins' weekend celebration postponed following firefighter deaths

A weekend event planned to celebrate the election of Toledo's new Mayor has been postponed.

An upcoming event, planned to celebrate the election of Toledo's new Mayor D. Michael Collins, has been postponed following the death of two Toledo firefighters.

A press release issued on behalf of the Transition Team for the Committee to Elect D. Michael Collins said in part, " The tragic loss of two members of Toledo Fire and Rescue on Sunday requires the event be rescheduled."

The announcement did not indicate if Collins was involved in the decision saying "the Special Events Committee of the Transition Team was ultimately responsible for planning and organizing this event --- And now its postponement."

The event,

called the "Collins Cares Celebration", was scheduled for this Saturday night, Feb.1, 2014 at the SeaGate Convention Centre at 401 Jefferson Ave. in Downtown Toledo.

The statement added that a "new date will be determined next week."

On Sunday, Toledo firefighters Private Stephen Machcinski and Private James Dickman died while fighting an apartment fire on Magnolia Street in Toledo.

The deaths are the first for the Toledo Fire Department in quite some time.

In 2009, firefighter Michael Darrington died in his sleep while on duty at Station 14.

In 1981, firefighter Donnie Cathcart died fighting a fire at Bell & Fernwood.
