Community Garden plans to clean up Blight on Blum street
TOLEDO,OHIO (WNWO)-- You can volunteer for a community cleanup to help turn blight into blooms.
It's a part of an earth day celebration held by the Junction Coalition in partnership with the Lucas County Land Bank through the city of Toledo.
The property on 1303 Blum Street used to be the site of a run-down home.
As part of Earth Day Weekend, volunteers are transforming it with a garden, trees, and painted rain barrels.
They'll also melt down a gun used in a violent crime in the area. and turn it into a garden tool.
"When our kids walk back and forth and all they see is the blighted homes and the empty lots it doesn't encourage...it doesn't build morale," said Megan Powell Environmental Specialist with the Junction Coalition. "Walking past a space like this will help kids build their self esteem and to see something beautiful in the neighborhood that they live in ."
To help Saturday morning just show up at the site from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m .
