Crash outside Cabela's kills one

A crash just outside Cabela's in Monroe County left one woman dead Monday evening.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported a fatal traffic crash on M-50 at Cabela's Boulevard in Dundee Township around 5:15 p.m.

Officers say Carl C. Pierson, 65, of Manchester, MI was turning left onto Cabela's Blvd. from M-50 when his Ford Focus was struck by a Mazda minivan driven by Karen L. Rathburn, 42, of Midlothian, VA. After impact, the minivan then struck a Dodge Neon driven by Elizabeth M. Tennant, 20, of Petersburg, MI.

Pierson was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor where he is listed in serious condition. His front-seat passenger, Brenda K. Pierson, 62, of Manchester, MI, was also taken to the Ann Arbor hospital where she died from injuries suffered in the crash.

Tennant was taken to Bixby Hospital in Adrian where she is listed in critical condition.

Rathburn was not injured in the crash. She was released at the scene. Children in the minivan at the time of the crash were not injured.

Officers say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash and that all drivers and passengers were wearing seatbelts.
