DETROIT (AP) - The father of two young children who died in a Detroit house fire has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says the children, ages 1 and 4, were left alone in the home Friday. Kevin Washington was charged Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse.
Washington has been in custody since Friday on unrelated charges. He doesn't have an attorney assigned yet.
Firefighters discovered Damien Washington and Mekhi Williams in a bedroom, but they didn't survive the fire.
Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the real consequences of leaving children alone at home don't match the "glorified and celebrated" version found in movies. Involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.(Copyright 2013 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)READ: Donations pour in for family displaced by fire
