Deputy killed in crash may have been texting

Toledo Police say they are looking into text messaging as a factor in the car crash that killed a Lucas County Sheriff's deputy early Sunday morning.

Kim Smith, 29, was off-duty when she crashed her Buick Rendezvous into a concrete barrier near the Phillips Ave. exit on I-75. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Smith's cell phone was found at the scene. They say it appeared she was typing a text message seconds before the crash occurred. Smith was ejected from her vehicle as it rolled over twice.

Toledo's texting while driving ban went into effect on Jan. 1, 2010.

Smith is said to have been a corrections officer at the Lucas County jail.

      The accident remains under investigation.
