Richard Schiewe, the maternal grandfather of missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth, is not convinced that the box of human remains found on a rafter inside a garage behind 704 Federal was there in the days following Elaina's disappearance. "That box was not there because I tok everything out of the rafters in the days after she went missing," Mr. Schiewe said. Nevertheless Schiewe is resigned to the inevitable, that the immature skeletal remains found in the garage of the home where the child was last seen are indeed those of Elaina. " I can tell you it's just speculation but I heard today that it is my granddaughter," Mr. Schiewe said.
Elaina's father T.J. Steinfurth was incredulous that the remains were found just yards away from where the family has been holding a vigil since the child went missing. "I'm still holding onto hope that it is not her, but at the end of the day you have to be realistic to some degree," Mr. Steinfurth said. A positive identification of the body could be announced by the Lucas County Coroner as early as Monday.
