Texas authorities say an 86-year-old Northwest Ohio man competing at the National Senior Games died during a bike race after crashing a mile from the finish line.
Police near Houston say the crash came during a 10-kilometer time trial. Paramedics took Elton Hammond Jr. of Lima to a hospital where he died on Tuesday.
Friends say Hammond died doing what he loved. He already had won a gold medal and two silver medals during the games.
His son says Hammond began cycling more than 40 years ago but didn't start racing until he was in his 70s.
