An elderly woman was found dead after an apartment fire in Frenchtown Township on Tuesday morning.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, fire crews were dispatched to Frenchtown Place Apartments on North Macomb Street around 11:25 a.m. after a fire alarm was triggered. The blaze was discovered on the seventh floor of the building by Deputy Sheriff Joseph Gore, who began evacuating residents because of the heavy smoke in the complex.
The resident of the apartment where the fire started, 75-year-old Bea Hankey, died during the inicident. The fire remains under investigation, but officials say foul play is not suspected in the cause of the fire.
