Ex-BGSU student sentenced for bogus distress call

A former Bowling Green State University student has been ordered to pay nearly $500,000 in restitution for making a false distress call.

21-year-old Danik Shiv Kumar of Sandusky was sentenced yesterday in federal court in Cleveland.

Kumar called a control tower after taking off for a solo flight from Cleveland to BGSU Airport in March 2012. He reported seeing a boat on lake erie sending up flares. He also said passengers were aboard.

Kumar admitted about a month later that he saw no such thing.

Along with having to pay $490,000 in restitution, he will spend three months in federal custody.
