One and a half years after she was accused of shooting a fellow sergeant, Gloria Burks retired from the Toledo Police Department on Tuesday.
Burks had been suspended without pay during the case, but was found not guilty of felonious assault by reason of insanity just three weeks ago. A judge ruled that a medical condition rendered Burks unable to understand her actions when she shot Sgt. Jeffery Betchel in September of 2010.
Sgt. Joe Heffernan confirmed that Burks will be able to collect whatever pension she is entitled to now that she has retired and the trial is over.
A hearing will be held on April 30 for consideration of mental hospitalization for Burks.
