Exploring Trees and Tombstones

A tombstone inside the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery

This is the third year for the Tree and Tombstone Tours in Toledoâ??s Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Todayâ??s theme was "They Built This City."

It was the 2nd and final tour of a series that began in the spring.

Patty Toneff, director of Community Outreach, who organized todayâ??s tour, commented on what she hope the attendants will learn.

Toneff said, "The Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is also an arboretum, but it is a wonderful place to learn about history and they are welcome to come here at any time just to appreciate the nature, art and history that is Woodlawn."

The tour took place in Section 15. Attendants learned about the maple, oak and dogwood trees in the area.

There are over 300 varieties of trees inside Woodlawn Cemetery.

Toneff comments, "We have a lot of different species that are in bloom right now, so that is what we will be concentrating on, so people can learn the names, maybe see them as they are driving through the city."
