Parade-goers painted the streets of downtown Toledo with patriotism in celebration of the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Thousands in the local community donned their red, white and blue for the annual Memorial Day parade. Representatives from every branch of the military marched in the parade, alongside community organizations and local high school marching bands. The parade route began at N. Summit St. at Jefferson St. and ended at Civic Center Mall.
Harry Reichow, a Vietnam War veteran with the U.S. Air Force, said he is grateful for the support.
â??They were clapping all the way down the street for us and it even brought tears to my eyes,â?? said Reichow, who recently lost a brother-in-law who also served in Vietnam.
A ceremony was held at Civic Center Mall following the parade. Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins, military personnel and other local leaders spoke at the event. Veterans and elected officials also placed wreaths on each of the war memorials.
