Fatal crash in Waterville Twp.

The crash caused a significant fuel spill on SR 295

One person is dead after an accident near Whitehouse Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred on SR 295 at the intersection of Neapolis-Waterville Road in Waterville Twp, south of Whitehouse.

Police say a 2001 Mack tractor-trailer, eastbound on Neapolis-Waterville Road, failed to stop for a stop sign and struck a 2003 Honda Pilot that was northbound on SR 295.

The Mack tractor-trailer, driven by James J. Gombash, 53, of Swanton, also struck a 1986 Chevrolet pikcup that was stopped westbound on the Neapolis-Waterville intersection. Gombash's tractor-trailer then veered off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

The driver of the SUV, Richard R. Seel, 46, of Grand Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene. His children, Regan Seel, 9, and Wyatt Seel, 13, were passengers in the vehicle and were life-flighted to Toledo Children's Hospital.

The driver of the pick-up, Michael Ackerman, of Walbridge, was taken by lifeflight to St. Vincent's Mercy Medical Center. His passenger, Thomas L. Magrum, of Helena, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital.

Gombash suffewas not injured.

Officials say fuel was also spilled as a result of the crash.

Berkey Southern Road (SR 295) was temporarily shut down between Stiles Road and Neapolis-Waterville Road in Waterville Township. The roadway is now open to traffic.

The crash remains under investigation.
