Toledo fire crews responded to a structure fire at a South Toledo landmark Sunday afternoon.
Crews received a call of a fire at the Tate Funeral Home, 1003 Broadway, around 12:55 p.m. Although the facility wasn TMt in operation, many describe it as a landmark in the south Toledo neighborhood.
Assistant Chief Luis Santiago says upon entering the building firefighters discovered there were multiple fires around which indicated arson.
Johnny Dixon lives on a home off of Broadway. Dixon says he was sitting outside on his porch when he noticed a little bit of smoke. At first I didn TMt think nothing of it and then I kept looking and I said its on fire. [I] jumped, got on my cell phone and called 911. Not long after it started blowing up real bad. It start from the back so I figured somebody had started it, said Dixon.
Crews worked for hours to extinguish the two-alarm fire. It got going pretty good the fact that its kind of wide open in there gave it pretty good air to get going, said Asst. Chief Santiago.
Whether or not this fire was related to any other recent fires set throughout the city remains unknown. Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
