Firefighters raise funds for families of fallen brothers

Local fire departments joined forces on Saturday to raise money for the families of two Toledo firefighters who recently died in the line of duty.

Toledo and Perkins Township Fire Departments accepted donations at the Glass City Marathon Expo at the University of Toledo's Savage Arena. Money raised from the sale of t-shirts and â??Toledo Strongâ?? wristbands will help the families of Privates Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman travel to Colorado Springs for the 2014 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Service in September. Both Toledo firefighters were killed fighting a blaze in January.

â??Itâ??s a unique thing, that brother and sisterhood that really just doesnâ??t exist anywhere else,â?? said Brian Hackenburg, who fought fires alongside James Dickman for ten years with Perkins Township Fire Department. He continued, â??So to see two departments come together like this, itâ??s amazing.â??

Hackenburg will honor the fallen firefighters by running in Sundayâ??s Glass City Marathon in full bunker gear.
