Earlier, Reuters announced the capture of a wounded Gadhafi near his hometown of Sirte. The news agency spoke with National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid, who said interim government fighters stormed the town on Thursday and quelled the last of Gadhafi's loyalists.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance," the senior NTC military official told Reuters by telephone.

Reuters later updated the story with another statement from the NTC official: "He (Gaddafi) was also hit in his head... There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

The capture of Sirte was the last major resistance by former regime supporters. The seige lasted two month after the fall of the capital, Tripoli.
