Free help for homeowners disputing property value

To better assist property owners of Lucas County, the auditorâ??s office will be holding a Board of Revision filing clinic.

Located at the Northwest Ohio Building & Trades, the clinic is offered to help citizens that require one-on-one assistance or need to simply drop off their forms. The clinic lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The deadline to file is April 1, and the auditorâ??s office will be open later on Monday to assist anyone on the day of the deadline. On Monday, the auditorâ??s office will be available on the 1st floor of One Government Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Board of Revision (BOR) reviews complaints citizens have with their property values. Homeowners who wish to challenge their 2012 property values as listed at the auditorâ??s office must do so before the April 1, 2013 deadline. Homeowners must complete and file a BOR application, also known as a Complaint against the Valuation of Real Property, before the deadline.

Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez and her staff are available to assist homeowners in researching his or her property value and in completing the forms. Homeowners may also research property values online via the Auditorâ??s Real Estate Information System (AREIS). If submitting forms by mail, please note that the Auditorâ??s office must receive completed and notarized forms by the April 1st deadline. Per the Ohio Revised Code, mail must be postmarked by April 1, 2013.

New this year, the Lucas County Auditorâ??s Office has received approval from the Ohio Department of Taxation to allow property owners in Lucas County to submit their value complaints via email. The Board of Revision has typically only been able to accept applications that have been submitted via traditional mail or hand delivered to the auditorâ??s office.
