Paulding County fugitive dead after shooting self
ANTWERP, Oh. —
The regional manhunt for an escaped inmate is over.
Paulding County Sheriff Jason Landers says Branden Powell, 32, died Monday after shooting himself in the basement of his parents' home in Antwerp.
In a release to news media, Sheriff Landers said information led officers to the home, where Powell was found in a crawl space around 6:00 p.m.
After more than three hours of negotiations, Powell shot himself, according to Landers.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Powell escaped from a transport van last Friday by overpowering a deputy. He stole the officer's gun and a handcuff key.
Several agencies were involved in the search.
"I would like to thank the numerous law enforcement agencies: Ohio State Highway Patrol, FBI, US Marshal Services, neighboring Sheriff’s and their deputies and their personnel who have assisted us around the clock since this past Friday," said Sheriff Landers in a release.
"While this is not the outcome law enforcement had hoped for, law enforcement hopes the community can rest knowing this armed and dangerous individual is no longer a danger to the community."
Powell was facing rape charges at the time of his escape.
