On Tuesday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) passed regulations requiring commercials maintain a constant volume level similar to the programs that they interrupt.

According to a Bloomberg News article, the 4-0 vote in favor of the new regulations will mean commercials can't be louder than surrounding programming beginning Dec. 13, 2012.

"We have received thousands of complaints about TV commercials that come on much louder than the programming around it," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.

According to NBC News, President Obama signed a measure into law last year giving the FCC authority to address the problem.
