Healthy grilling: tips to safe cooking

Different meats cook thoroughly at different temperatures, so you may have to adjust. (WNWO)

TOLEDO, Ohio (WNWO) - It's a big grilling weekend, but before you fire up the grill, Toledo-Lucas County Health Department has some reminders.

With it being so warm out, it's important to keep your cold items cold. Keep all meat over ice or in a cooler before grilling. Different foods cook thoroughly at different temperatures, so you may have to adjust and check by using a food thermometer.

Also, don’t cross contaminate. This can happen by simply touching raw meat, not washing your hands, and touching another food item.

"If you bring your raw hamburger out on one plate, don't use the same plate to bring in the cooked stuff,” said Eric Zgodzinski, health commissioner with Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. “Get another plate or wash that other one off really good.”

The health department said to contact your doctor if you start feeling sick.
