High levels of bacteria close Luna Pier for the first time this season
Monroe, MI (WNWO)-- Lake Erie's Luna Pier City Beach is closed in Monroe County. The Monroe County Health Department issued a Contamination Advisory for the shoreline and waters of the beach on July 12th.
Luna Pier is one of ten beaches under advisory/closure in the state of Michigan. The beach has been closed for 4 days due to high levels of bacteria. The publicly owned and public access beach was closed for a total of 65 days in 2016, but never experienced a high bacteria contamination in 2014 or 2015.
According to the Department of Environmental Quality website, a testing sample taken on the 11th of July yielded a daily mean bacteria concentration of 1088.72. That value exceeds Michigan Water Quality Standards (P323.1062) as a daily geometric mean for full body contact.
The beach is monitored once a week, on average, by the Monroe County Health Department. They will determine when, or if, the Luna Pier City Beach should reopen.
