Home explosion kills one in Liberty Township

Firefighters look for a second victim in the house explosion debris.

A home explosion killed one person and left another in serious condition Wednesday morning.

According to the Henry County Sheriff's Office, the explosion occurred around 7:30 a.m. at S-108 County Road 9 in Liberty Township. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to see that the home had exploded and was on fire. Crews began sifting through debris for injured persons.

Steven Collins, 72, who lived at the address, was rescued and taken by Life Flight to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.

By late morning, investigators located the body of Judy Garwood, 63, of Holgate.

Officials say the exact cause of the explosion has not been determined, but a gas leak is suspected. Houses surrounding the property received extensive damage.

A Liberty Center school bus was traveling down the street when the explosion occurred, according to the Liberty Center Fire Chief. A school counselor was on scene providing support to students riding on the bus. No children were injured.

The American Red Cross has been at the scene helping neighbors in the area.

Last week, two people were killed in a Troy Township home explosion of which investigators have blamed a leaking propane tank.
