Toledeo, OH - Dive teams are back in the water after police confirmed human hair was found in the Maumee River, near where previous searches for a missing toddler have gone cold.
According to Toledo Police, initial tests on a "clump of hair" found by a fisherman over the weekend indicate the hair is from a human. It has not been determined whether the hair belongs to missing 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth.
The sample will be sent to be tested for DNA, though police say that obtaining DNA from the hair may be difficult. If they are able to collect DNA from the hair, it will be tested against Elaina's parents to determine if it belongs to the missing girl.
The East Toledo toddler went missing on June 2.
Divers suspended their search of the river , near the High Level Bridge, weeks ago, but resumed Wednesday after determining the hair found was human.
At the search scene Wednesday morning, investigators were observed putting a large object into a bag and taking it away from the scene. However, there has been no indication that any substantial evidence or findings of note have been located.Angela Steinfurth, Elaina's mother, has been charged with obstructing justice, in connection with her daughter's disappearance. As she awaits pre-trial, Steinfurth is being held on $100,000 bond.
