I-75 SB reopens near Erie Rd. after multiple vehicle crash

Tow trucks have finished clearing the crash.

The southbound lanes of I-75 near Erie Road opens after officials had been working to clear a multiple vehicle crash.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened around 4:46 a.m. that involved six vehicles.

49-year-old Jeffrey Buchanan, of Woodhaven, Mich., was heading southbound when he tried avoid hitting a disabled black pick-up truck in the left lane. The truck had been in a previous crash and had broken down.

When Buchanan's vehicle swerved, it rolled over before coming to rest near the median. Moments later, two additional vehicles struck the pick-up truck.

Officials determined Buchanan was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pick-up truck had its hazard warning lights activated at the time of the crash, according to authorities.

Drivers traveling on the roadways were directed off the highway at Exit 6 as officials cleared the scene.
