LA porn condom ordinance breaks through

L.A. OKed a measure Tuesday that protects pornstars--whether they want it or not.

The Associated Press reports Los Angeles City Council voted 11-1 for an ordinance that requires the use of condoms on set in order to obtain permits to film. Porn producers would have to provide the rubbers themselves.

"This long struggle to move us to a place of making Los Angeles a safe place to make adult films has taken a huge leap forward today," said AIDS Healthcare Foundation president Michael Weinstein to CBS.

But the Free Speech Coalition says the government shouldn't be nosing around in the industry's business, especially since the rate of STDs has dramatically decreased and there have been no reports of HIV transmission in five years.

"Government regulation of filmmaking would likely undermine existing health and safety efforts and industry standards that are effective as well as take the government into dangerous new territory," Diane Duke, coalition executive director, told CBS.

The ordinance will go for a final vote next week.
