Local youth dance to perfection in the national spotlight

Dancers at Daryl Jervis Dance Studio practice their routine.

Local dance students from the Daryl Jervis Dance Studio in Sylvania recently competed in the DanceMakers National Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Between two seperate dances in the competition, the Daryl Jervis crew took both the top 'Grand Overall High Score' as well as 2nd place. In addition, senior male dancer Tyrone Cobham was crowned Mr. DanceMaker 2012 for his dance in the solo division. Both Cobham and the crew receiving the 'Grand Overall High Score' had perfect scores for their dances, a feat which studio owner Jen Shubeta-Harris says is unheard of at the national level.

Daryl Jervis Dance Studio, in business since 1935, has been a place for youth and adults to learn all types of dance, including tap, hip-hop, jazz, ballet, pointe, lyrical and all-boys classes as well. For the younger generation, classes begin as early as 2.5 years old in the Little Sparks Academy. Shubeta-Harris says that she has always wanted to own a dance studio, but particularly Darly Jervis Dance Studio, because of the great experience the studio had on her life and she wants to give that same experience back to the youth.

Registrations are currently open for new members, with classes beginning this Saturday, August 25. To find out more and start your registration, call (419)-843-9000.
