A brand new supermarket will open its doors in Maumee Friday, less than 12 hours after a busy sister store closes for good.
The new Kroger store, which had been under construction since December 2012, is in its final stages of set up prior to opening its doors for the first time. The store, located at the intersection of Reynolds Road and Dussel Drive, will be the first Kroger store in the city of Maumee.
"The growing population in this northwest Ohio community makes Maumee the ideal location for a customer-oriented supermarket like Kroger," said Bruce Macauly, president of Kroger's Columbus Division. "We designed this store to meet the needs of today's shopper, with convenience, quality products and energy efficiency in mind."
The new Maumee store, which required a $20 million investment, will feature a Starbucks, extensive produce department, a hot food service bistro, fresh sushi bar, wine tasting bar, cheese and olive shop, and Kitchen Place which carries small kitchen appliances and basic kitchen needs. The store is also designed to earn an Energy Star certification and features LED lighting and skylights.
The 90,000+ square foot store adds 85 new jobs to the community.
At 9 p.m. Thursday, the nearby Kroger store at 5109 Glendale Ave., just east of Reynolds Road, will close for good. All associates of the Glendale store were given the opportunity to transfer to the new Maumee location, according to Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.
Unlike the Glendale store, the new Maumee Kroger location will have a drive-thru pharmacy and onsite fuel center.
