Lucas County battles health issues

The Lucas Co. Health Department is out with a new strategic health plan for 2017-2020.

Lucas County is one of the worst counties in the state, ranking 73rd out of 88 in health outcomes.

Because of this, The Lucas Co. Health Department wants to focus on certain issues that are affecting the Toledo area.

One such issue is infant mortality. It's especially high among minorities.

“The issues come back to jobs, education things of that nature. There’s issues with racism or with how we treat people differently, cultures differently, that plays a role in there too. So there’s a lot of things that go into that infant mortality concern that we have to address," said Health Commissioner Eric Zgodzinski.

Other issues are also of concern.

“Obesity, understanding that you don’t need to be super thin but you need to be in somewhat shape," said Zgodzinski.

Their new plan is meant to focus efforts on getting everyone on the same page and focusing on certain conditions.

“What we really want to do is focus ourselves and say these are some things that we really want to work on," said Zgodzinski.
