Man charged with menacing after incident at Bowling Green VFW Hall

man said to have been acting in a threatening manner while carrying a gun inside a Bowling Green VFW Hall Friday has been arrested.

Bowling Green Police say Matthew A. Smith, of Custar, surrendered inside the VFW Hall on South Main Street shortly before Noon. Authorities responded to the hall after receiving a call of a man believed to be carrying a gun and acting in a threatening manner.

Police responded and secured the area around the hall. Surrounding businesses were closed and nearby Kenwood Elementary School was placed on lockdown.

Inside the hall, Smith was called out before surrendering to police. A search revealed he was not carrying a firearm.

The wood County Special Response Team found nothing of note inside the building after a search of the premises.

Smith has been charged with one count of aggravated menacing. The initial call to police came from a woman who claimed her daughter was inside the VFW hall with her estranged husband, Smith.

Traffic was blocked on South Main Street until after 1 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the incident which remains under investigation.
