Marblehead Lighthouse temporarily closed to public

Marblehead Lighthouse

The oldest continously operating lighthouse in the United States has cracks in its structure, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Marblehead Lighthouse will be closed to the public until a structural engineer can investigate the structure and determine whether or not it is safe.

The July 4 holiday weekend is a busy weekend for the historic lighthouse. There will be no tours through the holiday weekend and visitors will not be permitted to enter the lightouse.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the park which remains open, see the lighthouse from the outside, and take in the beautiful lake views. The lighthouse keeper's house, adjacent to the lighthouse, remains open and features historic displays and a tourist information center.

The historic lighthouse was constructed in 1819 and has been in continuous operation since.
