The highly-anticipated McCord Road underpass construction project in Springfield Township will soon begin, after years of planning.
The project has been awarded to Canton, Ohio-based Beaver Excavating Company for $23.4 million.
The company will construct an underpass beneath the Norfolk Southern railroad and build a roundabout at McCord Road and North Mall Drive. The intersection connects the Spring Meadows shopping center on the east side of the road with Springfield High School to the west.
Construction is set to begin in July or August and is expected to continue into November of 2016.
"The Lucas County Engineer's Office is very pleased to have finally reached the construction stage of the McCord Road Grade Separation project and we are grateful to the ODOT personnel that have helped to make this possible," says Lucas County Chief Deputy Engineer Jeff Lose.
The project is intended to reduce congestion caused by train traffic and improve safety at the crossing. In 2009, Springfield High School student Cody Brown was killed after trying to beat a train while crossing the railroad tracks on foot. His fellow classmate Brianna Mullinger was also struck, but survived the incident.
