More than 50,000 people have used Michigan's program to try to quit smoking in the last 10 years.
The state on Thursday reported that the Michigan Tobacco Quitline has grown from a regional pilot project offering telephone coaching to a comprehensive program since beginning in 2003. The quit line now has coaching on the Internet, through email and text messaging, and referrals to local quit-smoking programs.
About 23 percent of Michigan adults say they smoke cigarettes on a regular basis. That is higher than the U.S. average.
The quit line is available seven days a week and can be reached at 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) or https://michigan.quitlogix.org.
