Monroe County officials stress flooding preparedness

People in Monroe have been keeping a close eye on the River Raisin.

Ice melt on the frozen river caused minor flooding. Monroe County emergency officials say this year could be bad for flooding.

"We're doing good right now. Mother nature is being nice to us, but we're on the edge," warns Mark Hammond, director of Monroe County Emergency Management.

Officials say homeowners should be prepared in the event they have to evacuate.

Officials advise the following:

- Taking all important documents.

- Don't forget medications.

- Bring along pets when evacuating.

- Have a preparedness kit.

Hammond adds
if you see high flood waters, don't travel through it. Remember the phrase "turn around, don't drown."
