Monroe mom killed by distracted teen driver

A Monroe mother is dead after she was hit and killed by a distracted teenaged driver as the woman watched her daughter walk to the school bus Friday morning.

The Michigan State Police say the accident happened Friday morning just before 7am near Kay and Nobil Drives.

Investigators say the 17-year-old Monroe High School student and her sister were heading to school when the driver went to reach for a water bottle she had dropped. They say that caused the teen lose control of her vehicle, leave the road and hit the 42-year-old woman who was watching her daughter walk to the bus stop.

The unidentified woman died at the scene. The driver was taken to the hospital as a precation.

Michigan State Police say speed could have been a factor.
