Mother, son killed by ex-boyfriend in Lake Twp.

Two victims and the suspect were killed during the incident last night.

      Updated, 1 p.m.:

Police have identified 24-year-old Jorge Duran, Jr. as the suspect accused of shooting five people, killing his ex-girlfriend and son, on Tuesday night at a Laketon Terrace apartment complex in Lake Township.

Duran was mortally wounded by police officers at the scene during an exchange of gunfire, according to Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer.

During a Wednesday morning press conference, Chief Hummer said the preliminary investigation revealed Duran shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Amber Jones, at her apartment and then took his 3-year-old son. Duran knocked on the door of a second apartment nearby, and when one of the occupants opened the door, he opened fire and shot four people, including his son.

Witnesses told police Jones and Duran had broken up in the last few weeks. Investigators believe the second apartment may have belonged to Jones' new boyfriend or a love interest, according to Chief Hummer.

Lake Township police received a 911 call reporting an armed intruder breaking into 3749 Laketon Terrace and multiple gunshot victims at the scene around 9:30 p.m. Chief Hummer said Lake Township officers encountered the armed suspect shortly after in the parking lot, where he was killed in an exchange of gunfire.

"This was not a random event, it was brought to a close in a very expedient manner by the officers responding. It is not indicative of the community at all," Chief Hummer said. "It's a tragedy and tragedies happen, and none of us want to see it, especially involving children."

Police did not have an update on the conditions of the three other victims shot in the incident. Chief Hummer identified them as a 26-year-old male, 49-year-old female and a 39-year-old male, but would not release their names at the time of the press conference.
