New solar energy firm to align with UT, create jobs

Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner held a press conference Tuesday announcing that new solar energy materials will be produced in the Glass City.

At Tuesday's signing ceremony, Sphere Renewable Energy Corporation of California said it plans to launch production of poly-silicon at the University of Toledo's Advanced Renewable Energy Technology Center.

The new venture will be called Buckeye Silicon and is expected to create about 150 jobs locally. The company estimates 1,500 metric tons of the material will be made using advanced methods and low production costs.
