TOLEDO -- Pope Francis has named the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo's eighth Bishop.
Reverend Daniel E. Thomas will be installed as Bishop of Toledo in October after having served as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia since 2006.
The office of Bishop was left vacant in late 2013 after then Bishop Leonard P. Blair was installed as the Archbishop of Hartford, Conn.
"I and the entire diocese are delighted to welcome Bishop Thomas. We ask for God's blessings for him and for the people of the Diocese of Toledo as he assumes the office of chief shepherd of this local church ," said Reverend Charles Ritter, who has led the diocese since December 2013."W e priests especially look forward to getting to know him and working with him as his collaborators in ministry throughout our diocese."
Bishop Thomas was born and raised in Philadelphia before attending Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania for Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. He earned a licentiate in sacred theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.
While addressing the media on Tuesday, Bishop Thomas offered words to describe himself. "What is important is not so much my name, but what I am for you: a father, a brother, and a friend."
"I certainly look forward to getting to know all of you, to getting to know all of our rural, urban, and suburban parishes," said Bishop Thomas. "I look forward to my first meal at Tony Packo's. I look forward to my first MudHens game...and to rooting for Ohio State, of course."
The Diocese of Toledo serves 320,000 Roman Catholics in 124 parishes across northwest Ohio.
Bishop Thomas will be installed as Bishop of Toledo at a Mass to be celebrated at 2 p.m. on October 22, 2014 at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Boulevard.
